Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, shared a reflective statement on his recent trip to Indonesia.
On Monday, February 3rd, and Tuesday, February 4th, Obi engaged in insightful discussions with notable Indonesian leaders.
His first meeting was with Agung Laksono, former Minister and former Coordinating Minister of the Economy, as well as a member of the Presidential Advisory Board under Presidents Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Joko Widodo. Laksono offered valuable insights into the governance strategies of both administrations, focusing on the planning, execution, and determination that drove Indonesia’s transformation. He highlighted the importance of measurable development in critical areas.
Next, Obi met with Muhammad Jusuf Kalla, former Vice President of Indonesia, who uniquely served under both Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Joko Widodo. Kalla stressed that the accomplishments of both leaders were achieved through focused commitment, decisive leadership, and simultaneous development across various sectors.
Obi’s third session was with Yandri Susanto, the Minister of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions. Susanto detailed the significant progress made under President Joko Widodo’s administration in advancing rural development. The ministry’s efforts have centered on education, healthcare, and support for micro and small businesses within villages. By adopting a structured approach, ranging from underdeveloped to self-sufficient villages, the ministry ensures targeted progress. A leadership framework involving municipal and traditional heads has been crucial in achieving effective governance.
Peter Obi emphasized that Nigeria could achieve inclusive and sustainable growth by adopting structured, data-driven policies focused on rural development, industrialization, and diversification. With political will and strategic execution, Nigeria’s full potential can be unlocked, ensuring that no region is left behind.
