Let them hold their light and we will hold our money.” This is the strong message from the South-East Electricity Consumers Association (SEECA) as they issue a one-month ultimatum to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and Aba Electric.

The demand is clear – provide prepaid meters to homes and businesses in the South East.

SEECA maintains that these distribution companies are bound by law to install prepaid meters and ensure a steady supply of electricity to consumers, as directed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). In a recent statement, SEECA urged consumers in the region to withhold payment of electricity bills from June 15 to July 15, 2024, if prepaid meters are not installed. They also advised consumers to reject estimated bills and refrain from recharging prepaid meters unless they are assured of adequate electricity supply, in line with NERC’s Banding guidelines.

The statement reads, “From June 15 to July 15, 2024, if there are no prepaid meters in your homes and businesses, do not pay for electricity. Reject estimated bills. Consumers with prepaid meters should stop recharging unless they are certain of adequate electricity supply as per NERC and their Banding. EEDC and APL (Geometric) must install prepaid meters and transformers as required by law. They are also required to provide sufficient electricity to consumers as per NERC’s Banding.”

SEECA describes this as a one-month warning strike by the consumers against NERC and the distribution companies (DisCos), EEDC and APL- Geometrics.

SEECA also cautioned consumers against engaging in disputes or altercations with the staff of the distribution companies. They encouraged consumers to join their state SEECA platforms for effective guidance and coordination, adding, “Enough of this darkness and exploitation… The South East must be illuminated!”

They further advised, “Under no circumstances should any consumer prevent the DisCos’ staff from disconnecting power. Do not argue or fight with them. They have kept us in not only inconsistent or inadequate electricity supply for far too long but also in complete darkness.”

“Let them hold their light and we will hold our money.

“All consumers of electricity in the SouthEast must braze up for this challenge.

“Enough of this darkness and exploitation.

“Join your State SEECA platform for effective direction and coordination.
