The Labour Party (LP) caucus in the House of Representatives has hailed the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that ousted Julius Abure as the party’s national chairman.

The caucus has described the judgment as a “veritable tonic” for the party’s revival, marking a new chapter for LP’s future.

Victory for Party Stability and Leadership

In a statement issued by the LP caucus leader, Victor Ogene, the caucus praised the apex court’s decision as a much-needed catalyst for the party’s “stability and reinvention.” Ogene emphasized that the ruling sent a strong message to leaders who plays God, in his view, act as if they are above the democratic process.

Apex Court Overturns Court of Appeal’s Decision

On Friday, the Supreme Court overturned the Court of Appeal’s ruling that had recognized Abure as the LP’s national chairman. This judgment was welcomed by the LP caucus as a chance for the party to regain its footing after a period of leadership disputes.

A New Lease of Life for the Labour Party

Ogene described the ruling as “a much-needed elixir” that could revitalize the party, which has been plagued by internal conflict. He expressed gratitude for the court’s decisive action, which he believes will give the LP a fresh start.

Steps Toward Reconciliation and Future Elections

In light of the judgment, Ogene affirmed that the LP would swiftly implement measures to restore internal peace and prepare for future elections. He reassured party members that LP is committed to leadership that prioritizes the people’s welfare and interests.

He also noted that by next week, the National Caretaker Committee (NCC) – led by former Finance Minister Senator Esther Nenadi Usman – will organize an inclusive stakeholders’ meeting to plan the way forward for the party.

Avoidable Crisis and the Way Forward

Ogene pointed out that much of the internal strife within the LP could have been avoided had the ousted chairman and his team paid attention to the caucus’s advice and addressed concerns raised by other party stakeholders. With the judgment now behind them, the LP is poised to move forward with unity and purpose.
