The Labour Party’s National Transition Committee (NTC) has expressed its strong support for the national caretaker committee led by Nenadi Usman. Appointed by Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, Usman, a former senator for Kaduna South, will head a 29-member committee aimed at steering the party forward.
This decision has been met with resistance from factional leaders Callistus Okafor and Julius Abure, who both claim to be the legitimate heads of the party’s national working committee (NWC).
At a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Salisu Mohammed, spokesperson for the NTC, affirmed that the formation of Usman’s committee aligns with the Labour Party’s constitution and the electoral act. Mohammed criticized Abure’s rejection of the committee and accused him of spreading misinformation.
“The NEC meeting organized by the Governor of Abia State is a crucial intervention needed to address the issues of legality and corruption that have plagued the Labour Party under Abure’s leadership,” said Mohammed.
He emphasized that the recent meeting in Umuahia was not about removing Abure but addressing the challenges caused by his leadership. Mohammed urged Abure and his supporters to return to the party and acknowledge the need for reform.
“The actions and rhetoric of Abure and his followers are threats to the progress of the Labour Party,” Mohammed concluded.
