In his Christmas address to the nation on Sunday, Barrister Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, expressed deep sorrow over the fact that a significant number of Nigerians would be celebrating Christmas amidst hunger, attributing the situation to ineffective leadership.
Abure urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from the lessons taught by the birth of Jesus Christ, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to create a better world.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s potential as a nation abundant in resources, he criticized the current state of leadership, highlighting the country’s paradoxical standing as one of the world’s poorest nations despite its resource wealth.
He criticized recent government initiatives, such as a transportation policy for holiday travelers, arguing that the benefits would only reach a fraction of the population.
Abure questioned the sustainability of such measures beyond the festive season and expressed concerns about the challenges that economically disadvantaged Nigerians would face, especially with the reopening of schools in January.
Despite the prevailing uncertainties and challenges, Abure wished Nigerians a joyful celebration and encouraged them to remain hopeful, asserting that a new and improved Nigeria is not only possible but already on the horizon.
