Ahmed Yayari Mohammed has officially accepted his appointment as the Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on October 13, 2024.

In a statement titled “Acceptance of Appointment as the Acting National Chairman of Our Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),” he expressed a profound sense of responsibility towards the party and its members.

In his address, Mohammed emphasized the importance of reflection on recent domestic events within the PDP, particularly regarding the party’s role as a vital opposition in Nigeria’s political landscape. He highlighted the need for the PDP to adhere to the foundational principles of equity, fairness, and justice established by its founders.

Grateful for the outpouring of support and encouragement from party members nationwide, he noted their collective aspiration for a strong, democratic PDP that upholds its constitutional values. However, he acknowledged the party’s shortcomings in fulfilling its duties as a robust opposition, attributing this failure to internal conflicts that have hindered effective governance.

Recognizing the PDP’s historical significance during its 16 years in power, which are often referred to as Nigeria’s “golden years” of governance, Mohammed outlined his vision for revitalizing the party in line with its original mission. Appointed by the National Working Committee (NWC) on October 10, 2024, he aims to restore hope among party members, especially the youth and key stakeholders, by leading the PDP towards a more responsive and responsible political future.

Mohammed pledged to strictly adhere to the party’s constitution and maintain fairness towards all members, emphasizing that this approach would foster loyalty and commitment. His immediate focus will be on restoring member confidence by convening the long-awaited National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on October 24, 2024.

As part of his commitment to a democratic process, he called on the North Central Zone to urgently nominate a successor for the position previously held by Sen. Iyorchia Ayu. Mohammed sought the cooperation and support of his NWC colleagues, party organs, governors, and key stakeholders to ensure a successful NEC meeting that reflects the party’s collective aspirations.

In closing, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, inviting all members to join him in restoring the PDP’s glory and upholding democracy in Nigeria.
