Nigeria’s National Grid experienced a major failure on Sunday, plunging numerous cities, including the capital Abuja, into darkness.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the collapse, which occurred at 11:21 am on February 4, 2024.
In an official statement, AEDC explained, “The power outage being experienced is a result of a system failure from the national grid, which has led to a nationwide power outage. We are actively collaborating with relevant stakeholders to restore power as soon as the grid stabilizes, and we appreciate your patience during this time.”
This incident marks the first collapse of the National Grid in 2024, coming less than two months after a similar event in December left the entire nation without electricity. The recurrence of such disruptions has raised concerns about the reliability and stability of the country’s power infrastructure.
In a related development, the Nigerian Government, just last Friday, attributed the persistent power supply challenges to a shortage of gas supply to generating companies (GenCos). This revelation underscores the ongoing struggles faced by the country in addressing the root causes of its energy woes, further emphasizing the need for comprehensive solutions to ensure a stable and resilient power supply for the nation.
