The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has sharply criticized the recent surge in fuel prices by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), describing it as a severe blow to the already strained finances of ordinary Nigerians.

The price of fuel has jumped from 617 Naira to approximately 900 Naira, a rise that NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN) says exacerbates the economic difficulties facing millions across the nation.

In a statement shared on his X handle, Osigwe voiced the NBA’s deep concern over the sharp increase, highlighting its detrimental effects on the cost of living, transportation, and essential goods and services. He stressed that many Nigerians are already battling inflation, unemployment, and other economic hardships, making this additional financial strain particularly devastating.

Osigwe warned that if the fuel price hike is not reversed, it will only worsen the poverty and hardship experienced by citizens. While acknowledging the need for economic reforms and the government’s role in making tough decisions, the NBA insists that such measures should be implemented with careful consideration of their impact on the public. The association deems the recent price increase both harsh and unjustified at this time.
