Between January and March 15, a staggering 68 mass abductions have shaken Nigeria, surpassing the combined victim count of 2019 and 2020.

The data, meticulously compiled by SBM Intelligence, reveals a grim reality: 1,867 victims have fallen prey to this horrifying trend.

In 2019, 19 cases resulted in the abduction of 153 victims. The following year, 59 incidents left 1,152 individuals in captivity. But the situation escalated dramatically in 2021, with 153 abduction cases and 3,605 victims. By 2022, the numbers surged further, reaching 159 cases and 4,194 abducted individuals.

2023 witnessed an alarming spike, as armed groups abducted 277 people. Now, in the first 75 days of 2024, the frequency of mass abductions has reached almost one per day.

Kaduna state stands at the epicenter of this crisis, recording 132 mass abductions from 2019 to March 15, 2024. A staggering 3,969 victims have suffered in Kaduna’s turmoil. Zamfara follows closely, with 111 abductions affecting 3,345 people.

But the menace extends beyond these states. Katsina, with 83 incidents and 1,534 casualties, shares similar vulnerabilities. The common threads? Rising bandit warlords and interconnected borders, including the notorious Rugu, Sububu, and Munhaye forests.

As Nigeria grapples with this harrowing reality, urgent action is needed to safeguard its citizens and dismantle criminal networks.
