At the annual Nwonyo Fishing and Cultural Festival in Ibbi local government area of Taraba State, Major General Theophilus Danjuma (retd), a former Chief of Defence Staff, lamented Nigeria’s security challenges, which he said have made the country a laughing stock to the world.

Danjuma, who was the chairman of the occasion, expressed concern that Nigeria has become a theatre of absurdities that leaves a bitter taste in the minds of people globally. He urged Nigerians to take urgent steps to address the country’s perennial security challenges and save Nigeria’s reputation on the global stage.

“I want to warn you that if you truly want this festival to be an international festival, we must put our house in order and ensure peace in Taraba and Nigeria,” Danjuma said.

He noted that the country’s persistent violence, killings, and kidnappings have made it unsafe for both locals and foreigners, tarnishing the country’s image and making it an object of pillory.

“There is no sane foreign person that will come to Nigeria to celebrate with us if we continue to kill each other, if we continue to butcher each other and make our roads unsafe for people to move around,” Danjuma added.

He urged Nigerians to renew their commitment to promoting peace, harmony, and unity, stressing the need to put an end to the country’s security challenges to make it a safe destination for both local and international tourists.

“We must put our own house in order and have peace in our state and throughout the country if we want this to be truly an international festival,” Danjuma said.
