Abubakar Malami, former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, has announced his resignation from the All-Progressives Congress (APC) and his decision to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, as the opposition coalition against President Bola Tinubu officially unveiled the ADC as its new political platform ahead of the 2027 general election in Abuja.
Malami emphasized that his departure from the APC was not driven by anger or personal ambition but by a deep love for Nigeria and solidarity with its citizens facing severe hardships.
He stated, “After wide consultations and deep personal reflection, I hereby announce my resignation from the All-Progressives Congress (APC) and my decision to align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the party of choice for our coalition — a coalition driven by the urgent need to rescue our country from further decline.
This is not a decision made out of anger or ambition, but one inspired by love for our nation and concern for the hardship our people are facing daily.”
The former AGF sharply criticized the APC, accusing it of failing to address Nigeria’s mounting challenges. He highlighted the worsening insecurity across the country, particularly in the North, where banditry, kidnappings, and terrorism have become rampant.
Malami stated, “Nigeria is bleeding. Insecurity has taken over our homes, especially in the North. Banditry, kidnappings, and terrorism have become part of our lives while the government prioritizes politics over the safety of its citizens.”
He also pointed to the dire state of the economy, noting that the prices of basic food items have tripled, leaving many Nigerians unable to afford necessities. “Our economy is in shambles. The poor can no longer feed their families. Jobs are disappearing. Young people are hopeless,” Malami said. He accused the APC government of being consumed by propaganda and political distractions instead of focusing on solutions to these pressing issues.
Malami further criticized the APC for abandoning governance, alleging that appointments, projects, and policies are now driven by political loyalty rather than national interest. “I cannot remain part of a system that watches in silence as Nigerians suffer and die,” he declared. Praising the ADC, Malami described it as a platform built on the principles of justice, inclusion, competence, and national renewal. He expressed confidence that the opposition coalition, through the ADC, would chart a new course for Nigeria’s future, addressing the nation’s challenges and restoring hope for its citizens.
