Former presidential candidate and ex–Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has called for urgent national unity and transformative leadership, declaring that Nigeria stands at a historic crossroads.

In a statement shared via his X handle following a major political gathering in Enugu, Obi said the meeting brought together prominent leaders from across Nigeria, cutting across party lines, regions, and ethnic backgrounds. Attendees included former governors Okwesili Nwodo, Achike Udenwa, Sam Egwu, Emeka Ihedioha, former Senate President David Mark, former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, and several serving and former senators, lawmakers, and respected national figures.

According to Obi, the gathering reaffirmed a shared belief that Nigeria’s problems are not caused by a lack of resources or talent, but by poor leadership, corruption, and systemic failure. “Nigeria is not poor,” he said. “We have been looted into poverty. Our tragedy lies in a system that rewards mediocrity, punishes merit, and recycles failure.”

He stressed that insecurity, corruption, unemployment, inflation, and widespread despair are symptoms of entrenched impunity and greed, warning that cosmetic reforms can no longer save the nation. “The choice before us is clear,” Obi stated. “We must either continue the cycle of decay or find the courage to disrupt corruption and criminality in governance.”

Drawing from his nationwide engagements, including visits to neglected IDP camps, Obi noted that suffering cuts across all regions of the country. He maintained that this reality must not define Nigeria’s future or legacy.

Obi emphasized that with unity and competent leadership, Nigeria can unlock its vast potential by prioritizing agriculture and manufacturing, shifting from consumption to production, and building an inclusive economy that works for all citizens.

He called on political leaders, supporters of the Obidient Movement, and Nigerians across opposition parties to unite under a broad coalition within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by Senator David Mark. The coalition, he said, is driven by patriotism and national interest rather than personal ambition.

“This is a moment for courage, unity, and resolve,” Obi concluded. “Let history record that Nigeria’s turning point began here. A new, productive, and inclusive Nigeria is possible.”

A New Nigeria is POssible.
