The Nigerian Presidency has drawn a striking comparison between Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and former U.S. President Donald Trump.
This statement was made by Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Bola Tinubu, in response to the recent U.S. presidential debate featuring Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
Ajayi claimed that both Obi and Trump share a penchant for using highly negative language to describe their respective nations in a bid to garner voter sympathy. He stated, “Peter Obi is the Nigeria version of Donald Trump. Like Obi, Trump will use the most negative epithets imaginable to describe a country he wants to lead again just to make a point and rile up his base.”
In his analysis of the debate, Ajayi asserted that Kamala Harris effectively challenged Trump, winning the debate and demonstrating her capabilities. He noted that Harris was adept at exploiting Trump’s weaknesses, leading him into traps during their exchanges. Ajayi highlighted the fact-checking results, revealing that while Harris made only one incorrect claim, Trump made 33 false claims throughout the 90-minute debate.
This comparison has sparked discussions about the political rhetoric used by candidates in both Nigeria and the U.S., as well as the implications of such tactics on voter perception and engagement.
