A Nigerian, Linda Ifeoma, has triumphed in the Chinese category of a prestigious singing competition organized by the China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria and the China Cultural Centre.

The event, held at the Chinese Cultural Centre in Abuja, celebrated talents in both Chinese and English song categories and was sponsored by China Harbour Engineering Company Nigeria Limited.

Linda’s win is particularly remarkable as she competed in a category dominated by native Chinese speakers. Speaking to journalists at the event’s sidelines, she expressed her excitement and reflected on her journey, which began with initial doubts. “At that time [referring to her previous attempt], I was very discouraged. But when I was asked to try again, I thought, ‘Okay, let me give it another shot.’ Initially, I didn’t even expect to win the first round. So, I’m absolutely excited to win here today,” Linda shared.

The journey to the finale began with a successful performance in the preliminary round held days earlier. Linda’s preparation for the final involved intensive practice, culminating in a performance that showcased not only her vocal talent but also her mastery of the Chinese language. For her final performance, she delivered a Chinese song that highlighted her fluency and deep connection to the culture.

Linda’s connection to the Chinese language runs deep. After studying Business Education at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, she pursued Chinese as a minor course. She later earned a master’s degree in the language on a Chinese government scholarship in Nanjing, China. “When I was in school, I wanted to work in an embassy,” Linda explained. “I asked myself, ‘What do I need to achieve this goal?’ I realized I needed to learn a language other than my mother tongue.”

Beyond singing, Linda is also a songwriter and sees this victory as a stepping stone for her artistic ambitions. “Personally, I write songs, and I think this is an opportunity for me to step out of my shell and showcase my talent,” she said.

Encouraging fellow Nigerians to explore the Chinese language, Linda emphasized its potential to create cultural and professional opportunities. “The character aspect can be challenging, but with dedication, you’ll find it easier to learn,” she advised.

Other participants in the competition were also recognized in both English and Chinese categories, making the event a celebration of talent and cultural exchange.
