The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has criticized the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukayode, for implying that Nigerian students are engaged in cybercrime.
NN News Media, reports that Olukayode, had claimed that seven out of ten students in Nigeria are currently involved in cybercrimes.
But in response to the EFCC boss’s statement, the student union issued a statement on Friday, signed by its president, Pedro Chibuzo Obi, expressed displeasure, asserting that the comment by the EFCC chairman undermines the efforts of Nigerian students who prioritize their studies diligently.
Reacting to the comments made by the EFCC Chairman, the NANS president issued a statement denouncing the allegations. The statement expressed concern and disapproval, emphasizing that such assertions from a position of influence disregard the dedication of Nigerian students who prioritize education despite economic challenges.
The statement called the claim unsubstantiated, criticizing its negative impact on the integrity and aspirations of Nigerian students. It urged an immediate retraction of the statement and called for an apology to the entire student community whose character was unjustly impugned.
It’s worth noting that the EFCC later clarified that the chairman’s comments were misinterpreted, and he never stated that seven out of 10 Nigerian students are engaged in internet fraud.
