Nigerians earning a salary of ₦25,000 are now faced with a significant expense due to the National Identity Management Commission’s (NIMC) introduction of a ₦16,000 fee for correcting date of birth details on their mobile application.
This fee represents a substantial portion of their income, potentially making it challenging for them to afford this necessary service. The NIMC has implemented these charges as part of a broader update to the National Identification Number (NIN) system.
The commission recently disclosed the charges associated with updating information on the National Identification Number (NIN).
Over the weekend, the NIMC announced via its official handle that a new mobile app has been launched. This app allows users to correct inaccurately registered details such as names, dates of birth, and phone numbers.
To use the service, users must sign up on the app or online platform. They are then required to enter their NIN, last name, and email address to access the data modification feature. Initially, the NIMC did not specify any charges for data modifications. However, a week later, in response to user complaints about technical issues with the app, the commission introduced varying fees for different self-service data modification options. These include changes to the name, age, date of birth, phone number, and email address associated with the NIN.
Currently, the fees for correcting personal data on the NIMC App are as follows:
- Name Correction: N1,522.5
- Date of Birth Correction: N16,340
- Address Correction: N1,522.5
- Email Correction: N1,522.5
It’s important to note that the NIMC had previously published a fee schedule for various services related to updating information in the NIN database. In 2021, the NIMC announced that individuals would be charged fees ranging from N5,000 to N15,000 to correct inaccurate data in the NIN database. As explained by Funmi Opensanwo, the then NIMC regional coordinator in Alausa, Lagos, the charges vary depending on the type of correction needed, such as name, address, card renewal or replacement, and date of birth.
