The High Commissioner of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Kingdom, Sarafa Tunji Ishola, on Tuesday, hosted a dinner in honour of the President-General of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo socio-cultural organisation, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyawu.

The event, which was held at the residence of the High Commissioner had in attendance Chief Iwanyawu, accompanied by his spouse, members of the Ohanaeze, and staff members of the High Commission in London, with discussion centered around promoting peace and unity in Nigeria.

According to a statement released on Wednesday by the Commission, the President-General of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, during the dinner appreciated the High Commissioner for granting the organisation an audience, “noting that he is the first High Commissioner of Nigeria in the United Kingdom to grant audience to Ohanaeze Ndigbo.”

“The gathering was the second of such engagement by the High Commissioner. He urged the youth to disregard any issues that may incite discord and division in the country, and instead, uphold the leadership principles of the nation’s founding fathers, which promotes peaceful coexistence and harmony. Chief Iwanyawu also highlighted Nigeria’s potential for prosperity, emphasizing that with harmony, equity and fairness, Nigeria can become one of the most prosperous countries in the world due to its abundant human and natural resources,” the statement said.

While speaking, the High Commissioner, Sarafa Tunji Ishola, emphasised “the significant connections among Nigerian citizens in the United Kingdom, particularly the Igbo community known for its resilience, creativity and contributions to various fields that enrich the global tapestry of culture and progress.”

Continuing, the High Commissioner reiterated the importance of Nigeria’s unity, stating that it would facilitate stronger alliance with other nations worldwide. Ambassador Ishola, who concluded by underscoring the bond within the Nigerian community, and diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, urged the Ohanaeze to fostering peace, unity and camaraderie for the betterment of Nigeria.
