The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has strongly rejected the result of the recent re-run election in the Tsanyawa/Ghari State Assembly constituency of Kano State, pledging to challenge the outcome in court.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Garba Gwarmai, won the contest with 31,472 votes, defeating NNPP’s Yusuf Maigado who secured 27,931 votes a margin of 3,541 votes.
Addressing the media in Kano, NNPP State Chairman, Hashimu Suleiman Dungurawa, accused INEC of colluding with APC to manipulate the process and suppress the will of the people.
“While we celebrate the impressive performance of our candidates in Tsanyawa/Ghari and Shanono/Bagwai, the manipulation that marred the Tsanyawa/Ghari re-run is unacceptable,” Dungurawa said.
He alleged that despite a large voter turnout in favor of NNPP, many were disenfranchised, claiming that INEC announced the results from its headquarters in Kano rather than at the local collation center—violating due process and enabling political interference.
Dungurawa also criticized INEC for allegedly reinstating nullified results from earlier rounds of the election, stating that only presiding officers at polling units had the authority to cancel results not the electoral commission’s central office.
He praised the peaceful conduct of voters and security personnel in Shanono/Bagwai, warning that similar manipulation could have occurred there if results hadn’t been declared locally.
Reaffirming NNPP’s commitment to democratic principles, Dungurawa emphasized that the party would continue to stand against “injustice, favoritism, and electoral manipulation,” and confirmed plans to seek legal redress.
