Chuks Ibegbu, a former spokesman of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide, has urged both past and present Nigerian rulers to follow the example set by former military President, Ibrahim Babangida, and admit to their anti-people actions that have resulted in the loss of millions of lives, including during the civil war and various coups.
Babangida recently revealed that the late Chief Moshood Abiola was the rightful winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. This disclosure is part of his autobiography, titled “A Journey in Service,” which was launched in Abuja on Thursday, February 20, 2025.
During the book review, conducted by former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Babangida stated that MKO Abiola, who ran for the presidency under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), achieved both the highest number of votes and the required geographical distribution to claim the presidency.
Reacting to this revelation, Ibegbu, in a statement to journalists in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, on Friday, affirmed that Babangida’s admission about Moshood Abiola winning the June 12, 1993, presidential election is timely and appropriate.
Ibegbu expressed his expectation that Babangida should also address other significant events that occurred during his regime. According to him, Nigerians are still awaiting explanations regarding incidents such as the Hercules Air crash, the Gloria Okonkwo issue, and the death of Dele Giwa, among others.
He called on the country’s past civilian and military leaders to take a cue from Babangida by explaining to Nigerians how the nation’s wealth was utilized or mismanaged under their watch.
“We need to know all these for permanent reconciliation,” he added.
