Edo State’s Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has officially sanctioned a new minimum wage of N70,000 for the state’s civil servants.

The announcement was made via their official X account, stating that the new wage would be effective from May 1, 2024.

The statement read, “Governor Obaseki Elevates Minimum Wage to N70,000 in Edo, Inaugurates Labour House, Dedicates It to Comrade Adams Oshiomhole….”

While inaugurating the Labour House, which is unparalleled and considered the grandest in Nigeria, Governor Obaseki made this proclamation. The Labour House, constructed under the administration led by Governor Obaseki, is named in honor of a prominent labour unionist from Edo State, Comrade Sen. Adams Aliu Oshiomhole.

The wage increase is scheduled to commence from May 1, 2024. In May 2022, the governor had declared a minimum wage of N40,000 for state civil servants. Rumors are circulating that President Bola Tinubu might declare the new minimum wage on May 1, in observance of International Labour Day, and retroactively implement it from April.
