Barrister Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, has pointed to the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, and the Enugu state governorship candidate, Chijioke Edeoga, as the most significant casualties of the flawed electoral act.
Abure took a proactive step by appointing Chijioke Edeoga into the party’s committee tasked with reforming the nation’s electoral act. Edeoga, who faced electoral injustice in the March 18, 2023 election, visited the national headquarters of the Labour Party to express gratitude and shed light on the collusion between the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Enugu state government that led to his defeat.
Despite the overwhelming evidence supporting his victory, Edeoga emphasized the need for electoral act reform, condemning the electoral malpractices that undermine the sanctity of votes. He urged the party to champion the cause of protecting voters’ mandates.
In response, Abure, acknowledging the electoral robbery, emphasized the party’s commitment to electoral reforms. He disclosed plans to establish a committee to formulate a framework for the review, ensuring that the Labour Party actively participates in shaping the electoral landscape.
Abure emphasized that as victims of the flawed process, the Labour Party must take a leading role in defending votes and resolving the crisis at hand.
The move to include Edeoga, a major victim of electoral fraud, in the electoral reform committee underscores the party’s determination to address the challenges faced during the 2023 general election and prevent a recurrence in the future.
