Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, honored the memory of the late Justice Umennoli Emmanuel Nri Ezedi, former Chief Judge of Anambra State, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most principled and morally guided jurists.
The solemn burial ceremony, which drew dignitaries including the former President of the Nigerian Senate and current National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, was a moment of reflection on the immense contributions of Justice Ezedi to Nigeria’s judiciary.
Peter Obi, speaking at the ceremony, recalled Justice Ezedi not merely as a custodian of law but as a moral force who interpreted the law as an instrument for justice, not just legalism. Citing the wisdom of St. Augustine “without justice, states become little more than gangs of robbers” Obi painted a vivid portrait of a man whose judgments elevated the integrity of the bench.
Obi recounted a defining moment during his impeachment as Governor of Anambra State. At a time of intense political tension and pressure, Justice Ezedi stood firm. Though they had never met personally, Ezedi ruled the impeachment unconstitutional, upholding legal reasoning over political convenience. Obi described this landmark judgment as not just a legal victory, but a triumph for justice and a reaffirmation of democratic values in Nigeria.
“Justice Ezedi’s conduct during that period revealed his unwavering commitment to fairness and truth,” Obi said. “He didn’t merely apply the law he embodied it.”
The late Justice, known for his thoughtful deliberation, incorruptibility, and principled jurisprudence, leaves behind a legacy that transcends the courtroom. For Obi and many others, his life serves as a beacon of what the Nigerian judiciary can and should represent.
In closing, Obi reflected, “In life, he stood as a beacon of integrity; in death, he leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.”
