The Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has expressed deep sorrow over the untimely passing of Herbert Wigwe, CEO of Access Holdings, along with his wife and son, and another close friend, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, former group chairman of NGX Group.

In a heartfelt message shared on his social media platform, Obi lamented the tragic news, expressing his profound sadness at the loss of dear friends and influential figures in the business community.

“I’m deeply saddened by the tragic news of the passing of my dear friend, Mr. Herbert Wigwe, CEO of Access Holdings, along with his wife and son, and another close friend, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, former group chairman of NGX Group,” Obi wrote.

Recalling fond memories, Obi reminisced about his early encounters with Herbert Wigwe, particularly during the preparations for his traditional wedding. He described Herbert as a determined and forward-thinking individual who played a significant role in leading Access Bank to new heights, following in the footsteps of his brother, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Obi highlighted Herbert’s commendable philanthropic efforts in health and education, including the establishment of Wigwe University, which showcased his deep commitment to societal development through education.

“The loss of such an exceptional individual reminds us of life’s fleeting nature, encouraging us to live with a purpose that contributes to the betterment of humanity,” Obi reflected.

In closing, Obi extended his heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Herbert, his beloved wife, his son, and all those who lost their lives in the tragic plane crash. He prayed for eternal rest for the departed souls and for strength and solace for Herbert’s family, Access Holdings, and all those mourning this irreplaceable loss.
