Former Anambra State governor Peter Obi has said the 2027 presidential election will be a contest between Nigerians and bad leadership.
He made the statement on Saturday in Anambra State, where he officially registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Obi, who was the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, is expected to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential race.
During the event, he urged Nigerians to take part in the party’s ongoing online registration and become members.
Call for Nigerians to Join the Party
Obi asked supporters across the country to register and obtain their membership cards.
He said party leaders agreed to push for mass registration so that as many Nigerians as possible can join the party and take part in the political process ahead of future elections.
According to him, the 2027 election will focus on the demand for better leadership and justice in Nigeria.
South-East Wants Opportunity to Serve
Obi also spoke about the role of the South-East Nigeria in national leadership.
He said the region is an important part of the country and deserves the opportunity to produce Nigeria’s president.
Obi explained that people from the South-East live and do business in many parts of the country. Many have built homes and settled in different regions, showing their commitment to Nigeria.
He added that people in the region want a new Nigeria where success is based on hard work and ability, not on personal connections.
Poverty Reduction Key to Tackling Insecurity
Obi also stressed the need to reduce poverty across the country.
He said lifting Nigerians out of poverty would help lower insecurity and criminal activities. According to him, crime often increases when people lack opportunities and basic support.
Leaders Participate in Registration
Other political figures also completed their registration with the African Democratic Congress during the exercise.
They include Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central Senatorial District, and former lawmaker and presidential aide Ben Obi.
Party leaders had earlier gathered in Awka to launch the registration exercise and encouraged members to return to their wards to enrol and mobilise new members.
Obi registered at Agulu Ward 2 in Anaocha Local Government Area, while Umeh registered at Aguluzigbo Ward 1 in the same council area. Ben Obi registered in Awka South Local Government Area, all located in Anambra State
