The Obi of Onitsha, His Royal Majesty Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, has called for a peaceful and transparent gubernatorial election in Anambra State, scheduled for November 8, 2025. He made the appeal during the celebration of the 2025 Ofala Festival, marking his 24th year on the throne since ascending in 2002.

“This is our 24th Ofala festival since 2002 when I ascended the throne of Ezechima, our ancestor father,” Igwe Achebe said. “Except for the two-year disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we have consistently celebrated this tradition. We are most grateful to the Most High God and continue to seek His guidance and protection.”

The festival attracted a wide array of guests from far and near, all joining in the vibrant cultural celebration.

Turning to politics, the revered monarch expressed hope for a credible electoral process in the coming Anambra governorship poll. “The campaign is intense among the five major political parties. Our fervent prayer is for a peaceful and transparent election that allows the electorate to freely choose their leaders in line with democratic norms,” he said.

However, Igwe Achebe also voiced concern over the rising tide of insecurity in the Southeast, particularly violence and kidnapping, which he said continue to evolve in alarming ways. He linked much of the unrest to the influence of separatist agitator Simon Ekpa, whose recent conviction in Finland, he hoped, would help reduce the violence.

“We pray that the recent conviction of Simon Ekpa will contribute to curbing violent crimes in the region,” the monarch stated. “The economic toll has been devastating. A report by SBM Intelligence, titled ‘Four Years of Disruption’ and published in May 2025, estimates that the Southeast has lost approximately ₦7.6 trillion since 2021 due to the imposed disruptions.”

He ended on a reflective note, urging Ndigbo to re-examine their current path.

“This is a moment for deep reflection among our people. The rest of Nigeria—and indeed the world—is moving forward while we are being left behind due to the deliberate actions of a few who perpetuate violence among us,” Igwe Achebe lamented.
