Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has issued an open statement to President Bola Tinubu demanding full accountability for public resources under the current administration.

In the statement posted on Saturday, Obi congratulated the President on spending a night in Akwa Ibom State, one of the few times he has stayed overnight in a Nigerian state outside Lagos and Abuja. He expressed hope that Tinubu enjoyed the warmth, hospitality and food of the state, noting that the experience was likely better than those in foreign destinations where the President has spent more than 260 days outside Nigeria since assuming office.

Obi said the visit should inspire the President to travel to the remaining 33 states of the federation, spend time with ordinary people and explain what the administration has done with major funds. These include the ₦15.8 trillion saved from the removal of fuel subsidy, over $100 billion borrowed, increased revenues from taxing Nigerians, and additional government revenues that the administration celebrated last year for surpassing its target.

The former Anambra governor stated that Nigerians deserve clear answers on measurable outcomes. He asked how many citizens were pulled out of poverty during the period, how many out of school children were returned to classrooms, and how many functional primary healthcare centres were built. He also demanded details on how much electricity supply has improved, recalling the President’s earlier promise that Nigerians should not vote for him if power was not fixed. Obi further sought an explanation on how the country has been secured, pointing out that Nigeria still ranks among the most terrorised countries in the world.

He insisted that Nigerians deserve to know exactly what has been done with the resources entrusted to the government. Obi added that the New Nigeria he wants to build will rest on accountability, transparency and the physical, measurable impact of public resources on the lives of citizens. He ended the statement by affirming that a new Nigeria is possible.
