Former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili didn’t mince words when addressing the extravagant lifestyles of Nigeria’s President, Governors, and National Assembly members.

In a scathing critique, she highlighted their financial excesses as a provocative affront to citizens.

Ezekwesili, also the Founder of the School of Politics, Policy, and Governance (SPPG), expressed concern about the serial provocation faced by hard-pressed citizens. In a crisis-ridden economy, public officials should exemplify fiscal prudence, yet the self-indulgent lives of politicians—some of whom lacked credible electoral mandates—continue to irk the public.

She questioned how long the #NGRSenate and #HouseNGR could sustain such insensitivity. Using a local saying, she warned that the day would come when public resources would be squandered beyond reason. The Nigerian people, she emphasized, own this democracy—not a select few politicians.

Ezekwesili’s message is clear: The tone-deafness toward the suffering and frustration in the country is unsustainable. Nigeria’s citizens deserve better.
