Chidi Odinkalu, a former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, has issued a serious warning regarding the potential consequences if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) mismanages the upcoming gubernatorial election in Edo State.

As voters head to polling units across the state to choose a successor to Governor Godwin Obaseki, whose two terms conclude in November, Odinkalu stressed the critical role Edo plays as a transit hub in Nigeria.

In a statement on social media, he highlighted that mishandling the election could have far-reaching effects beyond Edo, impacting the entire nation.

Odinkalu particularly criticized INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu and the electoral body for potential interference in the governorship election, warning that such actions could lead to national repercussions.

“If Mahmood Yakubu & @inecnigeria mess with #EdoDecides2024 like they habitually do deliberately, all of #Nigeria will suffer: there is hardly anywhere you can go in Nigeria without passing through Edo…. Not that the electoral bandit in charge of #INEC much cares,” Odinkalu wrote on X.
