The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo Worldwide, has extended warm congratulations to Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her re-election as Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

In a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Alex Ogbonnia, the organization hailed Okonjo-Iweala as a “renowned erudite scholar, development economist, astute administrator, and moral beacon,” praising her outstanding accomplishments as a trailblazer and an exemplary Igbo daughter.

“We are not surprised that Okonjo-Iweala has maintained a steady upward trajectory in public life,” the statement read. “She is one of the few Nigerians committed to a life of integrity and excellence.”

Dr. Ogbonnia highlighted Okonjo-Iweala’s anti-corruption stance and her reforms aimed at increasing transparency in governance. “She introduced institutional mechanisms to reduce corruption and enhance transparency in public offices. Notably, she led negotiations with the Paris Club under President Olusegun Obasanjo, achieving debt relief for Nigeria, including the outright cancellation of $18 billion in debt.”

Okonjo-Iweala’s global influence and recognition were also celebrated. “She has appeared on the Forbes list of the 100 Most Powerful Women in the world for seven years,” the statement noted. “Her re-election as WTO Director-General is a testament to her impeccable track record and stellar performance during her first term.”

Ambassador Okey Emuchay, Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, echoed these sentiments, describing Okonjo-Iweala as “a paragon of virtues” who embodies Igbo character, ingenuity, elegance, and integrity.

“We are confident you will continue to serve with diligence and prudence. On behalf of all the structures of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, please accept our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes,” he added.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide’s message underscores the pride and inspiration Okonjo-Iweala’s achievements bring to the Igbo community and Nigeria at large
