The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has announced that the position of its President General will be zoned to Rivers State for the upcoming election in January 2025.
This decision was made during a meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) held in Enugu on Wednesday.
According to the group’s constitution, the zoning arrangement follows the established protocol for leadership succession within the Ohanaeze structure.
Dr. Alex Ogbonnia, the National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze, confirmed the decision, stating, “It is now Rivers State’s turn to produce the next President General for Ohanaeze Ndigbo in 2025.”
In addition, Ohanaeze resolved that Ambassador Emuchay, the group’s Secretary General, will consult with South-East governors, Igbo senators, traditional rulers, town unions, clergy, and other stakeholders to convene a meeting of the Imeobi Ohanaeze. This meeting will set up an electoral committee for the 2025 election.
A minute of silence was observed during the meeting in honor of prominent Igbo leaders who recently passed away, including the late Ohanaeze President General, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, as well as Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, and Onyeka Onwenu.
Members of the council also expressed satisfaction with Ambassador Okey Emuchay’s leadership and thanked the South-East Governors’ Forum, led by Senator Hope Uzodimma, for their continued support of the group. Ambassador Emuchay reassured the group that the 2025 election will be a resounding success.
