During the ongoing Ohanaeze Retreat at the Old Government Lodge in Enugu, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, issued a stern caution against individuals assuming positions they did not contest or win, urging them to cease tarnishing the image of Ndigbo.

Chief Iwuanyanwu emphasized the detrimental effects of such actions on the Igbo community’s reputation and urged those involved to reconsider their behavior for the advancement of Igboland.

“I call on those who are embarrassing Ndigbo by claiming unearned positions to reconsider their actions,” he stated. “If they persist, I will take necessary measures to safeguard the image and integrity of our people.”

Highlighting the potential consequences, Chief Iwuanyanwu mentioned the possibility of invoking traditional penalties such as ostracism, as dictated by Igbo culture and tradition.

He extended an olive branch to dissenting individuals, urging them to repent and align themselves with the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo for the collective good of the community. “If they repent and submit to our leadership, I am willing to collaborate with them for the betterment of Ndigbo,” he added.

In addition to addressing internal challenges, Chief Iwuanyanwu unveiled plans for two forthcoming publications under the auspices of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. One of these, titled “This Is Our Story,” will chronicle the Igbo experience in Nigeria from 1914 to the present day. The second book, “Builders of New Igboland,” will honor individuals who have contributed to the transformation of the region.

The retreat, themed “Ako bu ije,” attracted notable dignitaries including Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai, Chairman Lawrence Agubuzu, and Monsignor Obiora Ike. Retired Admiral Allison Madueke chaired the event, bringing together esteemed leaders to strategize for the future of Ndigbo.

NN News Media recalled, despite past instances where groups like the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its leader Nnamdi Kanu have acted without authorization, issuing statements on behalf of Ndi-Igbo and have caused disrepute through their actions. The wider Igbo community has distanced itself from such activities, reaffirming its commitment to lawful endeavors and disavowing criminality.

Through initiatives like the Ohanaeze Retreat and forthcoming publications, efforts are underway to strengthen unity, preserve heritage, and foster progress within the Igbo community.
