Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has expressed deep gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose following her reappointment as Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

In a statement, she extended heartfelt thanks to all 166 WTO member states for their unanimous support and recognition of her leadership.

“Today, it is with humility and a great sense of honor that I thank each and every one of the WTO members for the consensus they achieved in supporting my reappointment!” she said. “I don’t take this lightly.”

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala also acknowledged the dedication of her colleagues in the WTO Secretariat Staff, emphasizing their hard work as integral to the organization’s mission.

Reflecting on the weight of the role, she pledged to intensify efforts to collaborate with member nations to deliver impactful outcomes and push forward essential reforms to ensure the WTO remains effective in addressing 21st-century challenges.

“This is an enormous responsibility, and I will redouble my efforts to work with each and every member to try and deliver the results this organization needs,” she said. “We’ve done it before, we can do it again!”

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala extended her gratitude to her family, her home country, the Africa Region, and friends worldwide who celebrated her reappointment.

“Thank you for the wonderful words of recognition and support. I am deeply grateful for the hundreds of congratulatory messages I have received from across the globe.”

Her reappointment marks a continued chapter of transformative leadership as she guides the WTO through critical global trade discussions and reforms.
