The Delta United Movement (DUM) has dismissed reports alleging that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detained former Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.

In a statement issued by National Coordinator Nkem Onye on Thursday in Abuja, the political advocacy group clarified that Okowa was abroad during the period in question.

“We are deeply concerned by the spread of fake news, especially the recent claim of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa’s supposed detention by the EFCC,” Onye stated. According to him, investigations by the group confirmed that the report aligns with the agendas of certain political actors in Delta who may be attempting to create division and disrupt the current administration’s MORE Agenda.

Onye urged Delta residents to be wary of politically motivated misinformation that could incite disharmony in the state. He emphasized that while accountability is important, political adversaries should not weaponize false narratives to discredit others.

“We have observed an unsettling rise in negative media portrayals targeting both current and former leaders in Delta. These attacks appear to be orchestrated by political elements dissatisfied with recent electoral outcomes, and who are now using media channels to seek revenge,” he added.

DUM urged residents to prioritize Delta’s progress and unity, and to support the government’s efforts to move beyond election season and focus on governance. “Now is the time for all of us to rally behind a shared vision for Delta, setting aside political differences in the interest of our state’s collective well-being,” Onye concluded.
