The opposition leaders in Nigeria are joining forces to establish a mega political party, signaling a collective effort to reshape the country’s political landscape.
Contrary to speculations in the media, key figures such as Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and Dr Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, are presently not directing their attention towards vying for the 2027 Presidency.
The National Consultative Front (NCFront), under the leadership of Prof Pat Utomi, made this clarification in a statement released on Sunday.
The NCFront, through its acting spokesperson, Hamisu San Turaki, affirmed that the primary focus of these opposition leaders is the initiation of a new ultra mega political party.
The objective is to counter what they perceive as the “misrule” of the All-Progressives Congress (APC). The inaugural meeting for this political venture is scheduled to take place later this month.
Dispelling rumors about a 2027 political agenda, the NCFront labeled such notions as a strategic attempt by detractors to disrupt the proposed merger of leading opposition parties, particularly the initiative put forth by Atiku.
The statement highlighted that the current efforts are centered on consultations aimed at consolidating and strengthening political forces to address the perceived challenges posed by the APC-led Federal Government.
“The National Consultative Front, NCFront led by Prof Pat Utomi wishes to debunk the insinuation in the Media that leading opposition leaders like Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Mr Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and probably Dr Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, are already jostling to run for the Nigerian Presidency in the next circle of general elections in 2027,” the statement emphasized.
It further clarified, “For the avoidance of doubt, leading opposition leaders and parties in Nigeria are at the moment not focused on contesting for political offices in 2027 but presently holding consultations on how to streamline and strengthen their political forces to be able to rescue the country from the dangerous slide into misrule and anarchy foisted by the All-Progressives Congress-led Federal Government.”
The NCFront assured Nigerians that a Merger Facilitation Group, led by key opposition figures including Prof Pat Utomi, is ready to convene the inaugural meeting of the merger process. The overarching goal is to build a major mega political party that will effectively counter what they view as the unpopular and self-serving rule of the APC government. The inaugural meeting for this critical step is scheduled to take place later this month.
