Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has announced the implementation of a minimum wage of N70,000 for workers in the state, effective at the end of October.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing in Umuahia on Tuesday, emphasizing Governor Otti’s commitment to the welfare of workers. Kanu assured that payments will begin within days and will apply to all categories of employees.
He stated, “Payment of minimum wage will commence in the next few days. The Governor has approved that.” This decision follows Otti’s earlier promise to enhance the justice system in the state, which includes plans to construct 17 court halls across Abia’s local government areas.
Additionally, Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Sunny Onwuma, confirmed, “The governor has agreed to pay the minimum wage of N70,000. Grade level 1 Step 1 will be set at N70,000.”
It’s worth noting that the Abia State Government had previously announced in September that the new minimum wage would be implemented in October, marking a significant step in fulfilling Governor Otti’s commitment to improving the lives of workers in the state.
