The factional leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Tanimu Turaki on Friday held a high level political meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan amid growing talks about the 2027 presidential election.

The meeting came barely two days after Jonathan openly confirmed that he was consulting widely over the possibility of returning to the presidential race in 2027.

Jonathan made the revelation on Thursday while receiving a group of supporters at his office in Abuja. The visitors had appealed to the former president to enter the next presidential contest and rescue the country from its current challenges.

Responding to the calls, Jonathan said the decision to run for president was a major national issue that could not be taken lightly. He explained that he needed time to consult with key stakeholders across the country before making any final decision.

His comments immediately triggered fresh political discussions across the country, with many seeing the move as a sign that the former president may be preparing for a dramatic return to active politics.

The latest meeting between the PDP faction and Jonathan has further intensified speculations over possible alliances and political calculations ahead of the 2027 election.

At the same time, Jonathan is facing a legal battle over his possible presidential ambition.

A case currently before the Federal High Court in Abuja is seeking to stop the former president from contesting the 2027 election.

The suit was filed by lawyer Johnmary Jideobi who argued that Jonathan is constitutionally barred from seeking another term as president.

On April 28, Justice Peter Lifu ordered that hearing notices should be issued and served on all parties involved in the matter.

The lawyer is asking the court to stop Jonathan from presenting himself to any political party as a presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

The development has added fresh tension to Nigeria’s political scene as major parties quietly begin preparations for the next presidential battle.
