The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the citizens of Rivers State to actively participate in the Local Government Area elections scheduled for Saturday, October 5, 2024.

The party emphasizes the importance of asserting their sovereignty and constitutional rights by voting en masse.

In a press statement, the PDP underscored that the authority over democratic activities in Rivers State lies with its people, and this right to participate in the elections cannot be undermined by any individual or group. The party expressed confidence in the readiness of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), which has confirmed it possesses all necessary materials to conduct the elections in accordance with legal requirements, including a recent Supreme Court ruling affirming the elections’ legitimacy.

The PDP strongly condemned attempts by police forces allegedly aligned with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to disrupt the electoral process. Reports of police interference at RSIEC facilities were described as a direct challenge to democracy and the rule of law. The party warned that any actions to stifle the will of Rivers State citizens would not be tolerated.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, urged both national and international observers to hold the APC and the Inspector General of Police accountable for any potential disruptions during the elections. He reiterated that it is the duty of law enforcement to ensure a secure environment for voters.

The statement concluded with a salute to Rivers State residents for their determination to exercise their rights and peacefully elect representatives for their local governments, reinforcing the party’s commitment to supporting democratic processes within the state.
