Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, issued a statement celebrating Nigeria’s recent successes in continental soccer.

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman was crowned the African Footballer of the Year 2024, while Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was named the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year 2024 at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards. Additionally, the Super Falcons won the Women’s National Team of the Year award.

Obi expressed his heartfelt congratulations to the athletes, acknowledging their hard work, efforts, skills, and excellence.

He emphasized that sports have been a strong unifying factor in Nigeria and a means of job creation for talented youths. Obi highlighted that moments of victory like these demonstrate what Nigeria can achieve in sports with proper investment.

He concluded by stressing the importance of giving adequate attention to the sports sector, especially for Nigeria’s youthful population, and reaffirmed his belief that a New Nigeria remains possible.
