Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, expressed his heartfelt joy over the reappointment of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for a second term, effective September 1, 2025.

This announcement was made by the General Council of the organization.

Obi praised Iweala’s outstanding character and impressive credentials, highlighting her significant contributions to both national development and the global community.

He referred to her as one of Nigeria’s most valuable human capital exports—an embodiment of hard work and excellence who serves as a beacon of hope for younger generations.

As Iweala prepares to lead the WTO for another four years, Obi extended his wishes for her continued health, strength, and wisdom in championing what is right. He emphasized that her journey exemplifies a crucial lesson for Nigeria: leadership is a responsibility that requires genuine care for the people. He urged that the process of selecting leaders should prioritize character, competence, capability, and integrity.
