Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, shared his joy and pride on January 8, 2025, as he attended the formal opening of the University on the Niger in Umunya, Anambra State.

Obi expressed his admiration for the new institution, emphasizing his belief in education as the greatest investment in society and a powerful tool for development. He also highlighted his personal contributions to the establishment of the university.

Reflecting on his tenure as Governor of Anambra State, Obi recalled how he facilitated the return of schools to missionaries, which made the land for the university available. He persuaded the people of Umunya to allow the church to use the land for the educational project and acquired additional land in Mbaukwu to relocate the NYSC Camp, ensuring the church could utilize the Umunya location.

Obi’s initial support of N50 million and his promise of continued future support were pivotal in the university’s establishment. He extended his gratitude to everyone involved in the project, including Most Rev Dr. Henry Ndukuba, Primate of all Nigeria and Visitor to the University; Rt Rev’d Dr Owen Nwokolo, Chancellor of the University; Prof Chinedu Nebo, Vice Chancellor of the University; and Chief Osita Chidoka, Chairman & Director of Site Completion.

Wishing the students success in their academic journey, Obi reaffirmed his commitment to transforming the nation through collective investment in education, envisioning a New Nigeria for all. “It is POssible,” he concluded.
