Peter Obi, the 2023 Presidential candidate for Nigeria’s Labour Party, has extended his congratulations to the United Kingdom’s Labour Party following their decisive victory in Thursday’s parliamentary election.
Obi, who had publicly endorsed Keir Starmer for prime minister, rallied support for the UK’s Labour Party ahead of the July 4th election.
The UK’s Centre-left Labour Party secured an impressive 412 out of 650 seats, marking the end of the Conservative Party’s 14-year tenure. In a post on X, Obi congratulated Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour Party leader, who is set to succeed Rishi Sunak as Prime Minister.
Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, expressed hope that the new UK government would bolster democracy in Nigeria and strengthen bilateral ties. “I also hope that your government will promote stronger ties between the UK and Nigeria and help deepen our democracy, especially during the challenging times that our nation is going through,” he stated.
He highlighted Nigeria’s struggles with insecurity, education, healthcare, and poverty, emphasizing the potential benefits of UK support. “Let us work together to build a brighter future commonwealth for all. I wish you a successful tenure,” Obi added.
On Tuesday, Obi had used his official X page to share an image encouraging his followers to “Vote Labour on Thursday, July 4,” emphasizing the necessity of voting for change.
The UK political landscape has long been dominated by the Labour and Conservative parties. The Conservative Party, led by Sunak, has been in power for the past 14 years, appointing five prime ministers during this period. The last Labour government was headed by Gordon Brown from 2007 to 2010. Starmer, who has led the Labour Party since 2020, has campaigned for a change in government, serving as the Member of Parliament for Holborn and St. Pancras since 2015.
