In a heartfelt statement, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi shared his recent experience with Nigeria’s deteriorating road conditions, which hindered his journey to Edo State.

Obi had set out early this morning to pay his respects at the funeral of Gen. Cecil Esekhaigbe’s mother in Esan Central, Edo State, but the trip quickly turned difficult due to impassable roads.

Determined to avoid previous trouble spots, Obi took a different route through Agbor, only to find the road in a worse state than he anticipated. “The road was almost impassable by car,” Obi noted. His journey was ultimately halted by a major gridlock caused by a broken-down trailer that had completely blocked the way.

Undeterred, Obi attempted an alternate route via Ugoneki Road, but it too was nearly unusable, and he had no choice but to turn back. The experience, he shared, left him deeply saddened by the lack of functional infrastructure. Although unable to attend the event in person, he extended his heartfelt support and prayers to his friend, Gen. Cecil.

Obi took the opportunity to call on Nigerian leaders to prioritize the rehabilitation and maintenance of the country’s existing roads and infrastructure rather than launching new, incomplete projects. “I look forward to the day when Nigerians will be able to travel freely and safely on good and well-maintained roads in a New Nigeria that is Possible,” he expressed, emphasizing his vision for the nation’s future.
