Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has emphasized the importance of transparency and public participation in tax reform efforts.

While acknowledging the necessity of tax reforms, Obi underscored the need for these measures to be subjected to robust and informed public debate.

“A public hearing on tax reform is essential,” Obi stated, stressing the importance of engaging Nigerians from all walks of life in meaningful discussions. He argued that such inclusive deliberations are the cornerstone of public trust and vital for ensuring inclusivity in policymaking.

Obi cautioned against rushing decisions on matters of significant national impact. He emphasized that extensive deliberation and careful consideration are crucial to crafting policies that reflect diverse perspectives and ensure the broadest spectrum of public opinion is incorporated.

“When considering tax reforms and similar issues, it is insufficient to focus solely on the benefits to the government, particularly in terms of increasing revenue collection,” Obi noted. “We must also take into account the overall impact on the nation and the sustainability of all its regions.”

To foster trust and legitimacy—the bedrock of effective governance—Obi called on the government to prioritize public sensitization and secure citizen buy-in for any proposed policy changes. He warned that even the best-intended reforms could falter without public trust and engagement.

In conclusion, Obi urged the government to champion transparency, deliberation, and active public participation in shaping Nigeria’s future policies. “This is how we build a truly participatory democracy,” he said, reaffirming his belief that “a new Nigeria is possible.”
