Peter Obi, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, emphasized the importance of hard work and productivity as the true sources of blessings, cautioning against the belief in miraculous bank alerts after prayer.
Speaking on the “Honest Bunch” podcast hosted by Nedu and Husband Material, Obi asserted that claims of unexplained financial gains after prayer are deceptive and should be met with legal consequences.
“God blesses hard work, productivity, and industry—not those who are simply idle,” he stated. “Anyone claiming to receive bank alerts through prayer alone should be arrested. That money belongs to someone else.”
Obi’s comments challenge a common belief in some Nigerian religious circles where individuals often share stories of unexpected financial blessings as proof of divine favor. He emphasized that true success and blessings are rooted in consistent effort, dedication, and productivity.
In the same interview, Obi also discussed corruption in leadership, pointing out that gender can play a role in fostering ethical governance. Reflecting on his tenure as governor of Anambra State, he shared his approach of appointing women to senior positions, such as Chief of Staff and commissioners for Education and Planning, and commended their dedication and ethical approach.
“Women generally have a stronger commitment to family and societal welfare, which makes them less corrupt than men,” he noted. “Their family-centered dedication often drives them to ensure things function properly.”
Obi advocates for increased female representation in governance, suggesting that empowering women in leadership could enhance integrity and help curb corruption across Nigeria.
