Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to serving only one term if elected as President of Nigeria, insisting that four years is enough to make meaningful change.
Obi addressed the growing criticism surrounding his one-term pledge in a statement released on Tuesday, expressing surprise at the intense scrutiny his decision has generated.
He suggested that the backlash reflects a broader skepticism about whether real transformation can occur within a single presidential term a notion he strongly disagrees with.
“I am not driven by desperation for power or personal ambition,” Obi said. “What fuels me is a deep commitment to see Nigeria work. If that means serving sincerely and accountably for only four years, then I am ready.”
Obi went on to distance himself from typical political desperation, rejecting the use of aggressive rhetoric, unrealistic promises, personal attacks, or policy flip-flopping. He challenged critics to investigate his political history, asserting that his record remains free from electoral violence, vote rigging, or thuggery.
“Throughout my political journey, I have upheld peace, principle, and civility. I have never engaged in ballot box snatching or electoral malpractice. My opponents can confirm that I never tried to suppress or discredit them.”
Obi emphasized his belief in fair competition and transparent governance, noting that real leadership is about service, not entitlement. He also highlighted how four years of focused, accountable leadership could tackle corruption and redirect national resources toward critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
“For example, the trillions wasted on unnecessary luxuries like new presidential jets could instead fund public services that benefit the people. In four years, we can entrench the rule of law and conduct credible elections. It’s possible,” he said.
He concluded by restating his readiness to serve with sincerity and purpose: “If given the mandate, I will use every moment of that one term to build a Nigeria that works for all.”
