The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared its refusal to acknowledge the authority of Julius Abure, the national chairman of the Labour Party (LP).
The NLC has pledged to continue its efforts to remove Abure from his position.
Furthermore, the NLC has confirmed that Peter Obi, the LP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has the liberty to depart from the party if he so desires.
This was communicated by the NLC spokesperson, Benson Upah, in a recent interview. He emphasized, “Our stance on this issue is unambiguous and unaltered. As far as we’re concerned, Abure is a non-entity.”
Upah further clarified that the decision of Obi to remain or exit the party is not up for debate, affirming that the former governor has the autonomy to chart his own course. He stated that the NLC would not obstruct the path of the presidential candidate if he opts to switch to a different political party.
While acknowledging Obi as a valuable asset, Upah reiterated that the congress would respect his decision if he decides to leave. “Mr. Obi has the freedom of choice. If his preference is to leave the party, we have no right to judge him. However, if he chooses to stay, it’s undeniable that Peter Obi is a valuable asset any day,” he concluded.
