Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic loss of lives in Jigawa State due to a fuel tanker explosion.
In a statement shared via his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi highlighted the alarming frequency of such incidents and the heavy toll on innocent lives.
“It’s another sad day for our nation as we lose more precious lives under such painful circumstances,” he wrote. According to reports, the explosion claimed over 90 lives, with more than 50 others sustaining various degrees of injuries.
Police reports confirm that the high casualty rate resulted from the dangerous practice of people gathering to scoop fuel from the fallen tanker. This recurring behavior, driven by poverty and desperation, has led to many avoidable deaths.
Obi acknowledged the harsh economic realities pushing people to take such risks but urged an end to the dangerous practice. He emphasized the need for greater awareness and preventive measures, stating that “a combination of poverty and ignorance” has worsened the risks in such accidents.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, the government, and the people of Jigawa State, praying for comfort, healing, and strength to cope with the tragic loss. Obi also prayed for the deceased, asking for God’s forgiveness for their souls and quick recovery for the injured.
“May God Almighty grant eternal rest to the departed and heal the injured swiftly,” Obi concluded.
