Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-governor of Anambra State, announced through his X handle that he, alongside key members of the Labour Party and the Obidient Movement, visited Borno State to show solidarity and offer support to those affected by the recent devastating floods.

The delegation included Labour Party Caretaker Chairman Senator Nenadi Usman, Vice Presidential Candidate Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed, and National Coordinator of the Obidients Movement, Dr. Tanko Yunusa. Their visit aimed to extend condolences and assess the damage caused by the floods, which claimed lives, displaced thousands, and caused significant property destruction across the state.

During their visit, the group met with Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum and His Highness, the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garba Al Amin El-Kanemi. They also visited key locations, including the Bank of the North spare parts market, where traders suffered massive losses, and an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp at Government College, which currently houses thousands of displaced residents. Particularly heart-wrenching was their visit to a mother who lost her newborn twins to the floods.

In response to the disaster, Obi announced an initial donation of ₦50 million on behalf of the Labour Party to the Borno State government to support relief efforts. He reiterated the party’s commitment to continue providing aid and resources to help affected communities recover and rebuild.

“The Labour Party stands with the people of Borno in this difficult time,” Obi said, expressing his condolences to the victims and pledging ongoing support. “As the people of Borno navigate this challenging period, we want them to know they are not alone. We will do everything in our power to alleviate the suffering caused by this tragedy.”

The floods submerged over half of Maiduguri, leaving destruction in their wake. Peter Obi extended his gratitude to the Borno State government and other authorities for their ongoing interventions and prayed for the recovery of those still affected by the disaster.

In closing, Obi offered prayers for the deceased and expressed hope for a swift recovery for all affected. “May God Almighty bless Borno State and Nigeria, and may He grant strength to those on the path to recovery,” he concluded.
