Today, I joined His Eminence, Francis Cardinal Arinze, along with global dignitaries and thousands of mourners at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, to pay my final respects to His Holiness, Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21.
It was a deeply solemn moment, one that invited reflection on a life lived in extraordinary service to humanity.
Pope Francis was not only the spiritual leader of over a billion Catholics—he was a global moral voice, a guiding light in an age troubled by inequality, division, and indifference. His legacy is one of humility, simplicity, and a relentless commitment to justice and the dignity of every human being.
He lived as he preached: choosing the path of the poor, defending the voiceless, and calling out to a world that too often forgets its soul. Pope Francis showed us that true leadership is not measured by status, but by how many lives are touched and lifted.
My connection to his vision deepened when I was appointed to Scholars Occultantes, an international body of intellectuals he formed while serving as Archbishop. This group, committed to truth, ethical leadership, and social transformation, provided a rare window into the profound intellectual and spiritual force that guided him.
I had the rare blessing of meeting Pope Francis on three occasions. Each encounter was a quiet, powerful reminder of what it means to lead with conscience. His words were gentle but firm, his presence humble but commanding. He inspired not only faith but a sense of sacred duty toward humanity.
Meeting with Cardinal Arinze today, one of Africa’s most revered voices in the Catholic Church, underscored the significance of this farewell—not just for Catholics, but for the world. Cardinal Arinze’s presence reminded me of the deep roots and global reach of Pope Francis’ vision, especially in Africa, where his message of hope, inclusion, and justice continues to resonate.
As we mourn the passing of this extraordinary soul, I call on leaders everywhere—especially in Africa—to embrace the values Pope Francis championed. Let this not only be a time of grief, but a moment to recommit ourselves to leading with love, walking with the people, and serving with humility.
May the soul of Pope Francis rest in perfect peace, and may his legacy endure in all who seek to make the world more just, more compassionate, and more human.
