Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate from the 2023 elections, has affirmed that protests are a constitutional right in Nigeria.

His comments come in light of a planned nationwide protest by Nigerian youths scheduled for August 1-10, aimed at addressing the country’s dire economic conditions.

During an interview with Channels TV following a visit to Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Obi emphasized the importance of peaceful demonstrations. He stated, “Protest is allowed within the Nigerian Constitution. All I plead for all of those who are protesting to do so within the law and in a civil manner that allows us as a nation to show that we live within the law.”

Obi identified the root causes of the protest as “hunger and hopelessness” among the youth, urging authorities to listen to the grievances of the citizens. He remarked, “Everybody knows that things are difficult… the sponsors are very simple, it’s hunger and hopelessness among the youths.”

Additionally, Obi called on security agencies to manage the situation lawfully, advising against overbearing tactics. He stressed the necessity for engagement with protesters, stating, “Listen to the reason why people are protesting, engage and talk with them; that is what governance is all about”
